Statement of the squatted house

On the 27th of January we squatted the red and black corner house in the Bahnhofsstraße 23 in Oldenburg. This way we are making our own move against the big problem of abandoned property within the city. For us this is a step of self-empowerment. We want to take care of those problems on our own. We cannot accept a house being empty in the middle of the city, while rents are rising, people are being pushed out or evicted, people are living on the streets and and we are facing a lack of self-organized open spaces for culture.

But why did we choose exactly this place? It’s a good example to show the dramatic situation in Oldenburg: At the beginning of 2020 organisations like „AIDS-Hilfe“, „Fanprojekt Oldenburg“ and „AWO Jugendwerkstatt“ were pushed out of the building. The Aidshilfe, for example, has a hard time finding rooms in general, because the landlords have (discriminitive) prejudices against their clients.

It is now about to be renovated in a luxury way to be rented to prices almost nobody can pay. There are so many options to use this place because it’s in quite good conditions.

We want to face problems like this in a practical and effective way. We are convinced that no house should be empty. Especially nowadays we do not need more luxury flats, but affordable living spaces and self-organized cultural and open spaces. Profits of a few should never be more important than the common wealth and the interests of the people.

For this reasons we occupied the house and will fill it with life. We have to handle those problems on our own and make the houses accessable for everyone instead of letting them rott as objects of speculation.

Come over and support us to keep the red and black corner house and create a new open space in Oldenburg. We want a city for everyone, no more empty houses and people over profit!
